The Town of Monroe, MA
Monroe, Massachusetts has the distinction of being the least populated town in Franklin County, covering only 12 square miles and housing just 93 residents. Monroe is also the second smallest town in Massachusetts, having recorded 7 more residents than Goshen, Mass. in the 2000 Census.
Children in Monroe attend Abbott Memorial School in Florida, Mass. through eighth grade, then move on to either Drury High School or C.H. McCann Technical School in neighboring North Adams.
Monroe is also home to the 4,240-acre Monroe State Forest.
Visitors can hike to the top of Spruce Mountain and can see panoramic views of the Hoosac and Green Mountains from Raycroft Lookout. The Forest’s Dunbar Brook Trail winds through old-growth hardwood trees, while the brook drops 700 vertical feet in two miles, forming waterfalls, rapids, and pools.
The town is named for President James Monroe, who was in office when the town was incorporated. Monroe is located in northwest Franklin County along the Vermont state border.
